To start working and building android applications we want to download and setup Android SDK, Eclipse IDE and ADT plug-in. Prerequisites before starting off with the installation of Android SDK in Eclipse are having a Java JDK installed in your Computer system.

• Steps to install Java Development Kit are listed below.
• If you have JDK already installed, ignore these steps and start from step 5.
Note: To check if you have JDK installed, go to Command prompt and type java -version . It shows up a java version installed in your computer system.

STEP 1 : Download JDK

  1. Download the Java Development Kit (JDK) from the following link

  2. Check Accept license Agreement radio button and Select 64-bit or 32-bit based on your Windows OS and save it in a separate folder.

STEP 2 : Install JDK

  1. Install the downloaded file jdk-8u77-windows-x64.exe

  2. The following installed JDK and JRE in separate folders, which can be found in C:\Program Files\Java

  3. note : If 32-bit OS, it is found in C:\Program Files (x86)

STEP 3 : Set Environment Variable

  1. Copy the path of Java bin folder C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin in my case.

  2. Right click My Computer and Select Properties

  3. Select Advanced System Variables

  4. Select Environment variable

  5. In Environment Variable dialog box under System variables scroll down to find path and double click or select it click edit button.

  6. Edit System Variable dialog box open and paste the copied java bin path C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin in the variable value input box and click on ok.

STEP 4 : Test using Command Prompt

  1. In the Command Prompt type java -version

After successful installation of JDK Proceed with Android SDK installation. If JDK is already installed ignore the above steps.

Now Procedure for Android SDK installation in Eclipse IDE is listed below.

STEP 5 : Get Android SDK

  1. Go to the following link
  2. Scroll down until you find Get just the command line tools section
  3. Click on Save the zip file and extract to a separate folder.

STEP 6 : Install SDK tools and Packages

  1. Open SDK Manager.exe from the extracted SDK tools folder.

  2. Select the packages to install.

  3. Once the packages are downloaded close the window.

STEP 7 : Get Eclipse IDE

  1. Go to the following link
  2. Select Eclipse IDE for Java Developers 32 bit or 64 bit

  3. Select any source to download eclipse

  4. Extract the downloaded compressed file

STEP 8 : Add ADT plug-in Repository

  1. Run the eclipse executable file(.exe)
  2. Go to Help --> Install New Software

  3. Add new ADT

  4. Enter Name as "ADT" and Location as" ". Click on OK button.
  5. note : Enter both Name and Location without double quotes(" ")

  6. Check Developer Tools checkbox and click on next button.

  7. Click on next button

  8. Accept the terms and conditions and click on Finish button.

  9. After installation restart Eclipse.

STEP 9 : ADT preferences

  1. Select windows --> Preferences and select android tab

  2. Browse for the SDK location and click ok.

STEP 10 : Add Android Virtual Device Manger

  1. Select windows --> Android Virtual Device Manager

  2. Click on create button and proceed by entering the details shown in the image below

  3. Then click ok OK button
